HD-DVD, RIP

Tuesday February 19, 2008

It's time to retire a term from our desktop video glossary: HD-DVD. Toshiba has announced that it will stop producing the disks, giving Sony's Blu-ray disks a victory in this latest format war.

I never had a preference for one format or the other, but I am happy that the battle is over. With a high-definition standard established, consumers and professional videographers will be much more willing to invest in high-definition equipment like camera, dvds player and burners. Look for big investments in technology this year, and a Blu-ray player under every tree next Christmas!
