Video Transitions - Lazy or Creative?

Friday August 1, 2008

Digital video editing softwares like Movie Maker and iMovie come with a wide array of transitions that you can use in your videos to cut between different shots or move from one scene to another. Looking at professional videos, though, you'll hardly see any video transitions used. What do you think? Do you like to take advantage of flashy digital transitions, or do you prefer simple, straight cuts in your videos?

(1) Robert Harrison says:

The secret of proper use of transitions is, they should contribute to the understanding and appreciation of the video being seen. IF they purposefully call attention to themselves, that objective is lost and the overall effectiveness of the video is compromised.

They can be like punctuation in the language of filmmaking; a tool; another layer. Gotta contribute something bigger than itself.

Seems that they were just throwing random stuff, more on the lazy part. I only use the brightness increase or (but mostly) decrease. I expect more effects, than transitions. Then again, everyone has their different uses, or expectations when they use the editors. I mainly wonder why Movie Maker gives a Pixelation effect, but not a Depixelation one.
