The Future of Movies... From Korea
According to a story in the New York Time last week, Warner Brothers plans to start releasing movies online in South Korea two weeks before they come out on DVD. The move is in response to rampant illegal downloading in the country, which severely cuts into movie producers' profits.
Illegal downloads may be especially prevalent in South Korea, but they happen everywhere. Content producers are all working hard to find a way to keep profits high, while pirates are all working hard to keep distributing illegal copies. It will be interesting to see how this model works for Warner Brothers, and if gets adopted by other distributors, elsewhere in the world.
