The Latest in Video Search

Tuesday December 9, 2008

Until recently, internet search engines have relied solely on text to generate results. When you search for videos on YouTube, your results are all based on the text of the video file - the title, tags and description - not the video data itself. A new generation of video search engines is out to change that. Web sites like Video Surf use facial recognition software to analyze videos and deliver search results based on what is in the video, not what is written about it. Theoretically, you could use Video Surf to find videos of Britney Spears, even if her name appears nowhere in the video information. You can read more about Video Surf and other similar video search engines in this article from the New York Times.
