Although Final Cut Pro comes pre-packaged with video and audio transitions, you'll need to use keyframes if you want to fine-tune the controls. Keyframes will let you stretch out the duration of a fade or create a flicker, and also let you fade audio in and out. Check out this tutorial for an introduction to keyframes
