The Flash player is installed on more than 90 percent of computers worldwide, which led Flash video to become the standard format for web video, used on sites from YouTube to TMZ to CNN. Microsoft's Silverlight software was launched as a challenge to Flash's dominance, but has yet to gain significant adoption.
Flash videos, like those you see online, consist of two separate files, a FLV file, which contains the converted video, and a SWF file, which controls the look and behavior of the video player.
