Content Delivery Network, or CDN

By , About.com Guide

Definition:

A content delivery network, or CDN, is a service for delivering streamlined streaming video. Most CDNs offer video hosting, video streaming, content management systems, flash encoding and more. YouTube is a CDN, but generally the term refers to enterprise level, white-label solution that can be customized for your brand.

The main considerations when comparing CDNs are:

  • Storage space
  • HD capabilities
  • Video formats supported – Flash and Silverlight are the leaders
  • Bandwidth allowed
  • Video analytics

Also Known As: CDN
Examples: If you don't want to use a service like YouTube, look for a private content delivery network for hosting and streaming your online videos.
