Free Video Sharing on Heavy

By Gretchen Siegchrist, About.com

Overview of Heavy:

Heavy is a free video sharing website specializing in goofy animation and comedy programming.

Cost of Heavy:

Free

Terms of Service for Heavy:

HEAVY.COM OWNS ALL THE CONTENT YOU SUBMIT. Do NOT upload anything to Heavy unless you are willing to give up your rights to it.

If you decide to submit anyway, don’t upload any content that is obscene, harmful, illegal, copyrighted, etc.

Sign-up Procedure for Heavy:

Heavy asks for a username and password as well as your name, email address, country, city, state, zip code, gender, and birthday. You must also have a parent or guardian’s permission to sign up for the site if you’re under 18.

You must validate your account via a link sent to the email address you provided before you can upload anything.

Uploading to Heavy:

Heavy videos can be up to 150MB and in .asf, .avi, .mov, .mpg, .mp4, .wmv or .3gp format.

On the upload form, you can enter a title, description, tags and categories, and choose whether your video is public or private. There is also a checkbox to make sure you have read the Terms of Use Policy, so you can’t complain that you didn’t know that Heavy owns your video.

A window opens with a progress bar and other useful upload information; the upload is fairly quick. Heavy videos may take a while to process after upload; you can set a different thumbnail after the video appears on your profile.

Tagging on Heavy:

Heavy enables tagging. Separate tags with commas.

Compression in Heavy:

Heavy converts all videos to Flash, so make sure your video is high-quality before upload.

Viewability in Heavy:

Heavy videos look unusually bad. (Note that you must click “View Mode” in the upper right of your profile to be able to view your own video.) They are also surrounded by unusually large banner ads, and there’s a nasty trick where an ad comes up before your video that says “Click here to watch” which may fool you into watching an ad instead of your uploaded video. Wait a second and it will go away.

Sharing with Heavy:

To share a Heavy video, click “share it” or “embed it” at the bottom of the player. The first option allows you to email the video to friends (if you choose this you’ll also see a URL you can use to access the video) or post it to del.icio.us, Digg or Furl. Just enter your user info and Heavy will post it for you.

The “Embed”option gives you generic HTML or code for posting the video to WordPress, Livejournal or Blogger. If you click “Blog it,” you can enter login info for Blogger, Wordpress, Livejournal or Myspace and Heavy will post the video for you.
