Overview of Squrl:
With so much streaming video out there, it can be tough to scratch that video itch - how can you find what to watch, when you want to watch it? The Squrl video service makes watching online video easy, and is even available as an app for both Apple and Android mobile devices. Squrl's latest release features a "What's Hot" section, easy Facebook sharing, and smarter search capabilities than ever. This powerful streaming video app is free to download, and includes both free and premium streaming video.
Getting Started with Squrl:
Getting started with Squrl is free and easy - you don't even need to sign up. You can download the app from the Squrl website, or the Android or Apple app store. Once you have the app on your mobile device, open the app, and you'll be on your way to smart searching.
First you'll be prompted to select from a list of channels, including "Make me laugh", "Give me gossip", and "Keep me informed". By letting the app know your preferences, Squrl can do a better job of helping you find the video you want. Next, you'll be prompted to connect with friends using either Facebook or Twitter. This is your chance to link your existing social media accounts to Squrl for fast, easy video sharing, but it's not mandatory. Finally, you'll get to experience a great animated tour of the app that takes you through the latest features, and how to take advantage of them.
The Squrl Layout:
The main page of the app features what's fresh in your favorite categories of video, from comedy to entertainment to technology. The upper-right hand corner features a search bar that pulls streaming videos from YouTube, Vimeo, AOL, Netflix, Hulu and more. One of the coolest features included in the latest Squrl update is personalized recommendations. Similar to the "What's Hot" feature, which uses an algorithm to track the videos that are trending on social media networks, Squrl's remembers what you've searched for and gives you videos that match your preferences. This means the more you use the Squrl application, the smarter it will become at bringing you the latest and greatest videos that are right up your alley.
The "ME" section of the app is the main menu. Here, you'll be able to update your profile and adjust your taste preferences. In the profile section, you can choose whether or not your Squrl activity is made public, and also link your YouTube and Netflix accounts to the app. Linking these streaming video services will broaden your search results and speed up browsing. You can think of the Activity section of the app like your social media control panel. Here, you can see your friends' recent video activity, and check out the latest trending videos. Last but not least, the "ME" section features a queue of all the videos you want to watch in the future.
As if all of these browsing features weren't enough, you can manage your channel subscriptions with the "CHANNELS" menu at the bottom of the screen. This list is quite extensive, featuring over twenty different categories from "Extreme Sports" to "Japan".
One of the coolest features of the Squrl app is its compatibility with Apple AirPlay. The latest version of Squrl makes streaming video mobile with the same AirPlay features whether you're using an iPhone or iPad. In order to use AirPlay you'll need to be upgraded to iOS 4.2, have an Apple iPhone 3GS or later, and at least a second generation Apple TV. Once you have the latest version of Squrl installed on your iPad or iPhone, just turn on your Apple TV, choose a video, and access the AirPlay button to stream the video to your television! With the ability to access both free and premium TV with the Squrl app, including subscription based Netflix and Hulu channels, the Airplay feature lets you stream video from your mobile device like you would with a Nintendo Wii or digital cable box.
