To see what an effect looks like before adding it to a clip, click on the tile in the Effects window and then press Play on the viewer to see a sample clip play. This will give you an idea of how the effect will affect your clip.
Even though it seems easy to just add an effect to a clip and delete it later if you don't like it, you'll save yourself some time by previewing each effect before adding it to your timeline.
